Granola's new dictation feature works like this: press Fn on a Mac, speak, and the app cleans up and formats the text before inserting it into whatever app you're using, according to TechCrunch's October 29, 2026 report. It's free, with no word limit, and ships now only for Mac. iOS and Windows versions are listed as coming soon.

The feature arrives as a direct answer to Wispr Flow, the dictation app that spent August building toward Granola's turf. Wispr updated its terms of service on August 3 to signal a meeting notetaker was coming, then shipped one for Mac two days later, with system audio capture, generated action items, and AI search across meeting history. Fireflies made the same move on September 29, bundling a cross-app dictation tool called Fireflies Talk into every plan, including the free tier.

Money has followed the rivalry. Wispr raised $280 million at a $2 billion valuation on August 17, led by Menlo Ventures, bringing its total funding to roughly $361 million and framing its ambitions as moving beyond dictation. Granola raised $125 million at a $1.5 billion valuation in March, led by Index Ventures with Kleiner Perkins joining, alongside a push into team sharing and enterprise APIs. Wispr's valuation now sits above Granola's. Granola built the more established meeting-notes product first.

What Granola hasn't published is how the dictation feature handles the audio and text it processes. No changelog or blog post from the company lays out whether speech is handled on-device or sent to a server. Granola's security FAQ states that anonymized data from Free and Business plan users can be used to improve its models by default, unless a user opts out. That policy was written for meeting transcripts. It will now also cover anything typed by voice into any app on the Mac.

Wispr's marketing page for switching from Granola claims the older app's voice input was confined to Granola Chat and needed a live internet connection to work at all. Granola's Fn key dictation, unlimited and free as of this week, is the company's direct rebuttal to that pitch.

Splits time between what a product actually does in a working session and what a policy or corporate announcement actually obligates. A feature exists when it runs outside a demo; a rule takes effect on the date the text says it does, not the date of the press release.
