Roland's Melody Flip Brings Generative AI Into the DAW, Not the Chat Box

Roland has built a generative AI tool for music production, and it looks nothing like Suno or Udio. Called Melody Flip, the tool ships as a plug-in that loads directly into a digital audio workstation, putting it inside the same window where a producer is already arranging tracks rather than in a separate web app.

The core of Melody Flip is a library of roughly 250 "Palettes," themed collections of musical ideas organized by genre. A producer picks a Palette that matches the mood they're after, then asks the plug-in to generate some combination of melody, chord progression, bassline, or drums built from that palette's material.

There's a second workflow too: instead of starting from a Palette, a user can feed Melody Flip a reference track and have it generate new melodic ideas that build off what's already there. That makes the tool function less like a song generator and more like a co-writer that riffs on a part a musician has already sketched out.

Terrence O'Brien, writing for The Verge, frames the release as Roland's entry into generative AI music, drawing a direct line to the "push button; get song" pitch of tools like Suno. Melody Flip skips that trick. It generates instrumental building blocks rather than a finished track complete with vocals and a mixed arrangement, leaving assembly, editing, and final production inside the DAW where the plug-in lives.

That distinction matters for where the tool actually sits: it's aimed at people already working a session in a DAW, not at someone hoping to type a prompt and walk away with a mastered song. Roland built its reputation on decades of hardware synths and drum machines, and Melody Flip reads as an attempt to bring that same session-focused, building-block approach into generative AI rather than chase the one-shot song generators that have defined the category so far.
